Education across the world is at a crossroads. In many countries, a silent but worsening learning crisis is having disastrous effects on people, the planet, prosperity, and peace. In all countries, recent and emerging social, cultural, political, and technological shifts are forcing us to rethink and reimagine the purpose, content, and delivery of education.
In this context, the UN Secretary-General will convene the Transforming Education Summit at head of State/Government level on 19 September 2022 at UN Headquarters in New York and we are delighted to invite you to the Ministerial-level Pre-Summit, which will be held on 28 to 30 June 2022 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
The SDG 4 High-Level Steering Committee (HLSC) will meet during the Transforming Education Pre-Summit which will be held on 28 to 30 June 2022 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. The meeting will focus on the HLSC’s Urgent Call for Action. The breakfast meeting will take place on 29 June 2022 and allow to discuss the HLSC’s role in mobilizing and taking forward the Summit’s actions and commitments, in line with its mandate to lead the global coordination and monitoring of SDG 4.
The Transforming Education Summit provides an opportunity to mobilize public and political commitment around a new path for education. The Pre-Summit is a key milestone on the road to the Summit. The main objective of the Pre-Summit is to harness the evolving discussions on transforming education, mobilize actions and generate greater momentum towards September.
More specifically, the Pre-Summit will provide an inclusive and open forum for countries to:
- present preliminary outcomes of their national consultations;
- engage in discussions of key recommendations from the action tracks on initiatives for global cooperation; and
- spotlight some promising practices for accelerating progress on education towards 2030 and beyond.
One of the main outcomes of the Pre-Summit will be a shared understanding of the key elements of transforming education to inform the Secretary-General’s Call to Action in September.
The Pre-Summit will include a Global Engagement Day on 28 June and a two-day Ministerial Segment from 29-30 June (Watch live, see prorgamme). Ministers of Education will be invited to present their national consultation outcomes, to participate in high-level panels and to contribute to thematic discussions. Governments are strongly encouraged to include representatives from other ministries that are critical to the future of education, as well as a youth representative(s), in their delegations. In addition to ministers, the Pre-Summit will engage children, youth, parents, teachers, civil society actors, the private/business sector, the UN system, and academics from all countries to collectively raise political ambition and create a momentum towards a global movement for education.
